News from CEO David Baumgarten

Welcome to Business September 2005. Yes we are a little early, however we want to make sure that you get an inside edge on the events which we are offering.

At the moment I am in Hobart, attending our Annual BEC National Conference. We are a state-of-the-art IT organisation and as such it does not matter where I am physically, I have my finger on the pulse on the business. But don't tell my staff I'm not in my office!

This weekend we have the Small Business Expo at Darling Harbour. In my opinion this is a must for all small business. David Campbell, Small Business Minister, NSW Government will officially open the Expo on Friday 26th August 2005…What a great way to start Small Business September.

Before I share with you our September smorgasbord of events, let me tell you about our networking workshop which was held at the Swiss Grand on the 9th August. Over 40 people attended and if the pictures are to go by there was plenty of laughter at this appropriately named Humour in Business, Humour in Life workshop.

In addition to our normal events, in September we have an event each week in keeping with the four weekly themes of Business September, which are Technology, Marketing, Finances, and People and Systems.

See our Calendar of Events for more details. If you pre-pay and attend any two events you get to choose one other of our themed events with our compliments. One of the paid events must be the Satellite Breakfast launch. (Member discount of 25% also applies).

In my quest to find a new database program, I came across The Contact Group. Cedric Amoyal from that organisation has been fantastic. The key was for Cedric to understand my business and from that point on it was plain sailing. I am now an ACT database fan.

The good news is that the Contact Group, on seeing how we assist business, has provided the program on a sponsorship basis. More next month on our database implementation phase.

Bouquets must also go to the team at Trace Personal who have also come on board as a sponsor. They are currently assisting us with some staff placements. I have been impressed with the professional and friendly service we have received.

In addition to Business September events we are also launching the Home-Based Business Marketing Action program in Canada Bay and the Stepping Up Mentor Program for those more established businesses. See those newsletter items for more information.

Now on with Business September 2005. Enjoy the month… immerse yourselves in networking and the quest for information. Our programs are on the special Business September Calendar. To book any event click on the link on our calendar or phone our office on 9212 0555.

To book into our Satellite Business Breakfast on 1st September book online, email reception@easternsuburbsbec.com.au or phone our Bondi Junction office on 9369 2844.

In this newsletter you will also find out about the Independent Contractors Association, an update from the ATO Home-Based Business Forum partnership, which I am involved with, plus the customer service guru himself, Kym Illman, is back in Sydney with a Customer Service and World's Greatest Telephone Techniques seminar on 23rd September at East's League Club. We have negotiated special ticket rates - see below for more details.

In closing, do not forget to check our Community Noticeboard. We have functions at Bankstown and Canada Bay, the Eastern Suburbs Women's Network and the Indonesian Expo at the Overseas Passenger Terminal from the 9th to 11th September.

With all these networking events my advice is to take it slow and steady and enjoy it!

I look forward to seeing you at one of these exciting events.

David Baumgarten
CEO

ATO Update - Employee or independent contractor?

The ATO has issued a new brochure called Employee or independent contractor? (NAT13823-06.2005) for people in the building and construction industry.

It provides information to help payers in the industry determine if the individual they are paying is an employee or independent contractor (i.e. status of the worker ). It is available in paper format and also on the website at Employee or independent contractor

I may have already advised you that I am participating in an ATO Home-Based Business Partnership Forum. It is interesting to meet similar organisations and also to get an insight into how proactive the ATO is in seeking an understanding of the issues that confront the Home-Based Business Sector.

Do email me any questions /concerns that you would like to feed into this partnership. Email david@easternsuburbsbec.com.au

A useful link from the ATO Web site is Home-Based Work

ICA National Summit: Independents' Day 2005

Independent Contractors of Australia (ICA) is a not-for-profit association co-founded by Bob Day and Ken Phillips in mid-2001. Bob Day was succeeded by Angela MacRae as Chairman of Independent Contractors of Australia in July 2005.

Membership is open to all persons who are, or wish to be, independent contractors or seek information on independent contracting and who wish independent contractors' rights to be secured.

ICA has been formed to protect the rights of independent contractors to be treated fairly, justly and equitably in Australia and to be allowed to work free from intimidation or harassment from bureaucrats, the Australian Taxation Office, political parties, unions and others.

ICA will be holding its second annual summit - 'Independents Day 2005' - in Canberra on Wednesday 7 September 2005. With the Federal Government's independent contractors legislation in the offing, it's perfect timing for another gathering to discuss the issues crucial to all independent contractors.

For more information about the summit or ICA please go to www.contractworld.com.au

Do you know of any industrial designers?

I know a company that manufactures baby products, such as strollers, and they need someone to help design the products from a fashion/styling point of view.  A designer who knows the limitations of fabrics on hardwearing products, not just a fashion designer. Please email me at david@easternsuburbsbec.com.au if you can help.
